Miyajima (Itsukushima)

Itsukushima is an island in Hatsukaichi, Hiroshima Prefecture, commonly known as Miyajima or “Aki no Miyajima.” It’s counted among Japan’s Three Great Views (Nihon Sankei) and remains one of the country’s most popular destinations for both domestic and international visitors.

Itsukushima Shrine

Itsukushima Shrine is the head shrine of all Itsukushima shrines found throughout Japan. It’s said to have been founded in 593, giving it a long and storied history. Its Hira-butai stage, set over the water, is counted among Japan’s “Three Great Stages” alongside those at Shitennoji and Sumiyoshi Taisha, while its vermillion Otorii gate standing offshore is recognized as one of Japan’s “Three Great Torii Gates.”

Itsukushima Shrine itself was registered as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1996. Its summer festival, the Kangensai, carries on the elegant boat music tradition of Heian-era court nobles and is counted among Japan’s “Three Great Boat Rituals.”

A more detailed guide to the shrine’s history and highlights is planned as a separate article.

Daiganji Temple

Daiganji is one of Japan’s Three Great Benzaiten temples, enshrining Itsukushima Benzaiten. It once played a role in overseeing the construction and repair work of Itsukushima Shrine.

Treasure Hall

The Treasure Hall displays a selection of treasures passed down through Itsukushima Shrine, offering a glimpse into items dedicated to the shrine over its long history.

Daishoin Temple

Daishoin is said to have been founded in 806 by Kukai, the founder of the Shingon sect, after he practiced ascetic training on Mt. Misen. It’s known as one of the oldest temples on Miyajima.

Toyokuni Shrine & Five-Story Pagoda

Toyokuni Shrine, also affectionately known as “Senjokaku,” is said to have been built by Toyotomi Hideyoshi during the Azuchi-Momoyama period. Visitors are free to step inside the hall. Standing right beside it, the five-story pagoda completes one of Miyajima’s most iconic views.
