Hokkaido
HOKKAIDOJapan’s northernmost land of grand nature and great food.
In the snowy season or for a city stroll.
A guide to the areas I actually visited.
01What is Hokkaido like?ABOUT
Located at the northern tip of Japan, Hokkaido covers about 22% of the country’s land area. Heavy snow makes winter festivals and winter sports popular.
Hokkaido is a treasure trove of nature and food: the Shiretoko World Natural Heritage Site, the lavender fields of Furano, and food such as ramen, soup curry and seafood.

Sapporo
Sapporo, home of the prefectural government, offers sightseeing, food, history and nature. In Susukino you’ll find ramen, Genghis Khan barbecue and late-night parfait shops.

Otaru
Otaru once thrived so much it was called the “Wall Street of the North.” The boom faded, but buildings from that era remain — the Otaru Canal is the most famous.
