Kyoto
KYOTOTemples and shrines left by the thousand-year capital, and the town of Uji, the setting of a story.
From the stage of Kiyomizu to the banks of the Uji River.
Here are the two areas I actually walked.
01What is Kyoto like?ABOUT
Kyoto Prefecture lies in the north of the Kinki region and was home to Japan’s capital for more than a thousand years after the move to Heian-kyo in 794. Temples and shrines such as Kiyomizu-dera and Kinkaku-ji, mainly in Kyoto City, are registered as a World Heritage site, the “Historic Monuments of Ancient Kyoto.” It is about 2 hours 15 minutes from Tokyo on the Tokaido Shinkansen.
Kiyomizu-dera in the Higashiyama area of Kyoto City is one of Kyoto’s best-known temples, famous for the “stage of Kiyomizu.” Uji City, just south of Kyoto City, is known for Byodo-in and Uji tea, and is also popular for anime pilgrimage as the setting of “Sound! Euphonium.”
02Area GuideAREA GUIDE
Kyoto City
Kyoto City flourished as Japan’s capital after the move to Heian-kyo in 794. Kiyomizu-dera in Higashiyama is an old temple said to have been founded in 778, and from the “stage of Kiyomizu,” which juts out over a cliff, you can look out over the city.
Uji City
A town south of Kyoto City, known for Byodo-in and Uji tea. It is also popular as the setting of “Sound! Euphonium,” and places that appear in the series are scattered along the Uji River and around the stations.
