When you’re out sightseeing on Megijima and start to feel a little hungry, you may find yourself searching for a good place to eat.
That’s when we’d recommend HAKOBUNE. By the end of this article, you’ll probably be craving a visit the next time you’re on Megijima. Here’s a detailed report on the taste, price, and how busy it gets, based on an actual visit.
What is HAKOBUNE
HAKOBUNE is a café-style restaurant run by “onino hatake,” a farm on Megijima that mainly grows mushrooms. Its distinctive container-based exterior makes it stand out even among the island’s other buildings.
It’s about an 8-minute walk from Megijima Port, right along the island’s coastline, and the terrace seating offers views of the Seto Inland Sea. The restaurant is known for dishes made with wood ear mushrooms grown in-house on Megijima, making it a popular spot for food that showcases the island’s own ingredients.
The Signature Menu Item: “Wood Ear Mushroom Burger”

The restaurant’s signature item is the “Wood Ear Mushroom Burger” — a burger topped with lettuce, sliced tomato, a beef patty, and a generous helping of house-grown wood ear mushrooms. It’s an original burger you can only get at HAKOBUNE.
Menu and Prices
| Item | Price (tax included) |
|---|---|
| Wood Ear Mushroom Burger (single) | ¥900 |
| Fries | ¥300 |
| Drink | ¥350 |
| Beer | ¥600 |
| Tosa Ice Cream | ¥400 |
There’s no set/combo menu available for the burger, so keep in mind you’ll need to order each item separately.
Our Impressions After Actually Trying It
It was genuinely delicious. Before trying it, we were skeptical — “does wood ear mushroom really go with a burger?” — but it turned out to work surprisingly well. The crunchy texture of the mushroom added a nice accent, it paired well with the sauce, and we enjoyed every bite without getting tired of the flavor.
During Peak Season, Service Can Take a While
We visited in the middle of Golden Week, when the island sees a lot of tourists. Because of that, it took over 20 minutes for our food to arrive.
This was simply due to a temporary rush of customers, not any issue on the restaurant’s part. Still, if you’d like your food quickly, we’d recommend visiting outside of lunchtime and outside of peak travel seasons.
About Seating
Our impression was that there weren’t a huge number of seats available. That said, this was during a busy period — at other times, the seating may well feel like plenty. There are about 3 seats inside and about 5 seats outdoors.
Takeout is also available, so if all the seats are taken, you could enjoy your food while taking in the view from the beach along the coast, or on a bench near the port.
A Great Stop to Combine with Sightseeing on Megijima
Megijima is also known as the setting for the legend of Momotarō’s ogre-slaying tale, and the island has attractions such as the Onigashima Great Cave scattered throughout. After exploring the cave or walking around the island, HAKOBUNE is a great place to take a break with a wood ear mushroom burger and a cold drink.

Summary
HAKOBUNE is a restaurant whose signature dish, the Wood Ear Mushroom Burger, is made with self-grown mushrooms from Megijima. It costs ¥900, and since there’s no set menu, you’ll order items individually. During peak season, a rush of customers can mean a bit of a wait, so if you want your food quickly, it’s best to avoid lunchtime and busy travel periods. Seating is also somewhat limited, so taking advantage of takeout to enjoy your meal somewhere else along the coast is a great option too.
When visiting Megijima, be sure to pair your trip with sights like the Onigashima Great Cave — and don’t miss the chance to try HAKOBUNE’s Wood Ear Mushroom Burger.
